A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
